 11 Face Treason Charges as Police Recover AK-47s, Uzi Weapons in Kabulonga

Police in Zambia have disclosed that 11 people apprehended during a joint security operation at a house in Kabulonga, Lusaka, are facing treason-related offences.


The development was announced by Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba, who said the suspects include lawyer George Chisanga, Bishop Trevor Mwamba, Patrick Mwansa, the husband of Tasila Lungu, and several other individuals.


According to the police, the group also includes three former army commandos who have specialised military training and two retired police officers, including one who previously served in the Flying Squad.


Weapons and military equipment recovered


Police said the joint security operation resulted in the recovery of several firearms and other items believed to be of military significance.


Among the items recovered were:


- Five AK-47 rifles

- 60 rounds of ammunition

- Military-version automatic Uzi weapons

- A Zastava pistol

- A bulletproof vest

- A commando dagger

- Other items believed to be relevant to the investigation


Musamba said the defence and security wings had been monitoring the activities of the individuals before the operation was conducted.


Investigation continues


Police have indicated that investigations into the matter are continuing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged activities and the recovered weapons.


The announcement has attracted public attention because of the identities and backgrounds of some of those arrested, including individuals with legal, religious, military and law-enforcement backgrounds.


Authorities are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses and as the suspects appear before the relevant legal authorities.


What happens next?


The suspects remain subject to the legal process, and the allegations against them have not yet been proven in court. Under Zambian law, every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
